My take is that, when it comes to forming relationships, fear of rejection is deadly. Although if someone has a low sex drive today, that would to me be enough of an incompatibility that I wouldn't want to date them. But because I simply don't have practice. Sometimes, it seems to me, that knowing sex is only for marriage tends to accelerate the dating process for one, 'casual dating' doesn't really exist for a lot of these people, they'll only accept dating someone that they could see marrying, who shares the same belief on waiting until marriage.

For all I know, this guy could be very sweet, yet overly cautious. It might have been entirely possible, just not desired. Yes, people change their religious convictions. Even if you wanted that, for reasons unrelated to wanting a romantic relationship like, you wanted children, you wanted someone to live with, or whatever , and you've now decided you're willing to put up with having a boyfriend to get those other things, whatever they were. It was a big deal to me as well at that age, but I had absolutely no idea how to lose it as I had difficulty talking to girls.
